hi all!
As promised, I am doing more video/audio uploads.
I do not like myself on video, so I listened to the audio.
This was not my best interview.
But in the spirit of tolerating discomfort I’m sharing the video I made with my friend Dr. Ari Tuckman where we discuss his new book. We filmed this on my grandfather’s birthday, and after a very stressful month of June. I was a bit off my game.
Funny enough, we did not talk very directly about getting shit done.
Instead we talked about all the deeper emotional work that has to happen to integrate ADHD into your life before you can begin to get shit done.
what productivity is (also what it isn’t)
bouncing back after a period of low productivity (or living in crisis mode)
not everything is within your control, including productivity
how Dr. Tuckman designed the book to help you bridge the gap between intention and action
life with ADHD is uncomfortable. We can and should still do things
why relying on adrenaline, or negative reinforcement, is not a great way to live
showing others you are trying *without* feeling like you owe a social debt
we dislike deadlines, structure, and constraints (but we actually need them)
why productivity “solutions” sold to ADHD adults rarely work in real life
the real purpose of productivity
Bottom line: (<1 minute summary)
The purpose of being productive is to have a better life. This begins with managing your own ADHD, while also not overworking yourself trying to “fix” ADHD, or throwing yourself under the bus.
Keep in mind, the performance of productivity for others does not = personal satisfaction.
Life gets so much more interesting when you feel at choice about how you want to show up, who matters, and how you spend your time. The better you understand yourself, and your flavor of ADHD, the easier it gets to prioritize.
As Dr. Tuckman explains in his book (and our conversation), there’s an emotional aspect to productivity with ADHD that has to be considered before you start experimenting with tools and strategies.
My advice is to use the exercises at the end of each section, the—-Put It to Work & What, When, Where and Why?—- because actively choosing what to do and why, matters just as much as doing a shit-ton of stuff.
